Key Roles & Responsibilities
The Clinical Database Designer will be responsible for designing, validating, and maintaining clinical trial databases to ensure high-quality data collection and submission readiness. The role requires close collaboration with data managers, database programmers, sponsors, and internal project teams. Clinical Database Designer Job at Medpace
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and maintaining eCRF (electronic Case Report Form) specifications in alignment with CDISC standards for clinical data collection and submission.
- Managing standard templates for eCRFs and Edit Check Specifications to ensure consistency across studies.
- Reviewing clinical trial protocols and customizing library eCRFs on a study-by-study basis from database build through database lock.
- Preparing and maintaining Edit Check Specifications to ensure collected data is complete, logical, and aligned with protocol-defined assessment schedules.
- Supporting database lifecycle activities including change requests, updates, and database lock procedures.
- Performing detailed validation of eCRFs and edit checks to ensure all data entry scenarios are tested, documented, and compliant with specifications.
- Providing clear, accurate, and actionable feedback to Clinical Database Programmers during database development and validation phases.
- Collaborating closely with Data Managers and Sponsors to explain database design decisions and ensure sponsor expectations are met.
- Participating in sponsor meetings during study setup to clarify eCRF design, data capture workflows, and system configurations.
- Working with Clinical Database Programmers to confirm that specifications are clearly defined and technically feasible within the selected EDC system.
- Designing customized study-level reports using EDC reporting tools such as Business Objects or JReview to support ongoing data review activities.
- Leading internal eCRF specification review meetings with cross-functional project teams.
- Leading external eCRF review discussions with sponsors and confidently explaining design decisions, technical constraints, and alternative solutions when required.

Eligibility Criteria
Education
Candidates must possess one of the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences
- Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science
- Equivalent scientific or technical qualification relevant to clinical data management
Experience
- Minimum 1 year of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Building EDC database specifications
- Performing User Acceptance Testing (UAT) for clinical databases
- Supporting eCRF development and validation activities
Skills Required
- Strong understanding of EDC systems and clinical database design concepts.
- Knowledge of CDISC standards for clinical data collection and submission.
- Experience working with eCRFs, edit checks, and clinical trial protocols.
- Familiarity with database build, validation, and lock processes.
- Ability to interpret protocols and translate requirements into functional database designs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for sponsor and internal interactions.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail when reviewing specifications and validation results.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional, global teams.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills.
